31International Collaborative Learning Programwith Australian National UniversityStudents in Online Dialogue with Pope FrancisIndia Week Commemorating Agreementwith Indian Institute of Technology DelhiThe Australia-Japan Student Policy Summit with Australia National University (ANU) was held in Canberra from March 18 to 22. This was a pilot program for inclusion in the 2024 academic curriculum. A total of 19 students participated, including 12 from ANU and 7 from Sophia. The program will address a different theme each year, aiming to draft a communiqué to address social issues faced by both Australia and Japan with the goal of collaborating to achieve an ideal society. The theme for the inaugural 2023 program was “Diversity and Inclusion.” Participants engaged in pre-program studies tailored to their interests, and gave presentations on the first day of the program on topics such as indigenous populations, sexual diversity, and educational diversity.India, with its rapid economic growth and abundant market opportu-nities, boasts a high standard of education, particularly in the fields of science and technology. Sophia considers India a strategic area for pro-moting globalization and concluded a collaboration agreement in April 2024 with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD), known for producing leaders in the global IT industry.“Sophia University India Week” was held at the Yotsuya Campus from July 1 to 3 to commemorate the agreement. The event featured a symposium titled “The Future of Japan and India: The Role of Universities,” with Ambassador of India to Japan Sibi George who is committed to strengthening Japan-India relations through industry-govern-ment-academia collaboration. In addition to the symposium, the three-day event included workshops on transpor-tation science and technology conducted by researchers from Sophia and IITD, as well as a “University Students in India” workshop with Sophia and IITD students discussing university life in Japan and India. On June 20, 2024, three Sophia students participated as student representatives from Japan in “Building Bridges Across Asia Pacific: A Synodal Encounter Between Pope Francis and University Students,” a Loyola University Chicago organized event co-hosted by the Pontifical Commission for Latin America. The “Building Bridges Initiative,” launched by Pope Francis in 2022, marked the first time for students from around the world to engage in direct dialogue with the Pope. The 2024 event followed previous events held in North America, South America, South Asia, and Africa, and it included students from the Asia-Pacific region. Prior to the dia-logue with the Pope, students from each country chose topics from their region for dis-cussion. Twenty-seven participating university students from Japan discussed specific issues and solutions related to a sustainable global environment, economic justice, and holistic human development. On the day of the dialogue, three students reported the results of their discussions to the Pope, and engaged in a lively, broad-minded conversation.
