The program is based on the concept of “designing one’s life in a positive and innovative way as a citizen of a changing world.” Centered on the principles of “enriching one’s individuality,” “enhancing one’s life,” “envisioning one’s future,” and “living with others,” the courses are open to any-one with a desire to learn, from high school students to working adults, regardless of age or gender. They are structured to help par-ticipants cultivate their humanity and values to establish a genu-ine way of life in complex social circumstances. “We may live in different societies but we are all global citizens,” Terumichi says. “The program offers a space for us to think and learn about issues from the perspective of a global citizen: What are the social issues of our time and how is society changing? How does technological advancement affect our perceptions? Cultivating oneself through education allows for the acquisition of new perspectives and ways of thinking, and the resulting be-liefs and experiences enhance our individual learning styles, mak-ing our lives more vibrant.”“Through learning about technological innovations such as AI and big data, as well as the social transformations driven by changes in our work and lifestyles, students will have the oppor-tunity to think about their own lives and future, and how to in-teract with society. The inclusion of ‘living with others’ — a core Sophia principle — as an ideal is a fundamental aspect of enrich-ing one’s life.”The Sophia Global Citizen Program will include a lineup on three central themes: “social issues,” such as SDGs, declining birth rates, and natural disasters; “technological innovation,” including AI, big data, and biotechnology; and “social change,” which covers labor, lifestyle, and ethics. The content of the courses will be reg-ularly reassessed in consideration of ongoing trends. “Sophia will continue to offer courses appropriate to our times, no matter if only one student enrolls,” Terumichi declared.
