Reflecting on the visit, Yamazaki added, “It was an excel-lent opportunity for the students to learn about AfDB and get an idea of what working with Africa is like. I be-lieve this invaluable opportunity will contribute to their broader vision of Africa, the world, and themselves.”Founded in 1950 under the initiative of UNESCO and higher education leaders around the world, the IAU has nearly 600 members from over 120 countries and regions. The location of the annual IAU International Confer-ence rotates, allowing attendees to experience the university atmosphere of host countries. Each con-ference is dedicated to a specific topic in global higher education. The IAU International Conference is open to IAU members and other higher education leaders and experts. At the closing ceremony of the IAU 2023 International Conference in Qatar, Sophia President Yoshiaki Terumichi said, “It is a great honor for Sophia University to hold next year’s IAU International Conference at our campus in Tokyo.”Sophia University hosted its 20th United Nations Weeks between October 7 and 24. In addition to events on topics such as peace-building, artificial intelligence, education, and sustainable food systems, this year’s UN Weeks included workshops for students interested in careers at international organizations and in the field of international cooperation. There was also a symposium centered on STEM education that highlighted the most recent initiatives of Sophia’s Faculty of Science and Technology. Two symposiums concerning peace-building and conflict attracted particular at-tention. In the “Life of Palestine Refugee Students in the Gaza Strip” symposium held on October 7, UNRWA Health Programme Director Akihiro Seita intro-duced his organization’s activities in Gaza and invited three junior-high students attending UNRWA schools in Gaza to speak about their aspirations and activities. The other symposium, “The Role of the United Nations in East Timor,” held on October 24 – United Nations Day – had an invited panel discussing how peace was achieved in East Timor and what the UN’s contributions were. “Learn from Africa” Program Delegation VisitsAfrican Development Bank HeadquartersUnited Nations Weeks October 2023Sophia University to host IAU International Conference in 2024
