UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE COURSES AND PROGRAMS TAUGHT IN ENGLISH Sophia University has a wide variety of programs that offer de-grees taught entirely in English. Students can study business and economics, science and technology, environmental stud-ies, and sustainable future-related topics in an environment that brings together students and faculty members from different cultural, linguistic, and religious backgrounds. NON-DEGREE PROGRAMSNon-degree students can enroll in the Faculty of Liberal Arts (FLA) or the Center for Language Education and Research (CLER) to take undergraduate courses and earn credits on a full -time basis. This non-degree status suits those who wish to earn credits in English for a limited time and for international students who wish to study Japanese intensively.SHORT-TERM PROGRAMSSummer Sessions and January Session are offered for those who are interested in short-term study at Sophia. Program partici-pants can gain first-hand experience on many aspects of not only Japan, but also East Asian culture and society – witnessing the myriad of ways in which the cultures of the world are reflected in the maze-like urban landscape of Tokyo. The Summer Sessions have welcomed over 11,000 students from around the globe since its foundation in 1961. First launched in 2013, January Session is also popular among our participants, consisting of courses which take participants on a journey through the world of Japanese language, culture, and contemporary social issues.EXCHANGE PROGRAM Not only degree-seeking students, but also international stu-dents from partner institutions with an exchange agreement with Sophia can also study in programs taught in English as ex-change students. Around 350 students come from all over the world each semester, which enhances the diversity of the Sophia student body.27Learning Opportunities for International StudentsResearch InstitutesRESEARCH INSTITUTES DIVISIONPROJECT RESEARCH DIVISIONAFFILIATED RESEARCH ORGANIZATIONSInstitute for Christian CultureInstitute of Medieval ThoughtIberoamerican InstituteLinguistic Institute for International CommunicationInstitute of Global ConcernInstitute of Comparative CultureEuropean InstituteInstitute of Asian, African, and Middle Eastern StudiesInstitute of American and Canadian StudiesInstitute for Studies of the Global EnvironmentInstitute of Media, Culture and JournalismInstitute of Islamic Area StudiesNanotechnology Research CenterResearch and Development Center for CAE TechnologiesPhotonics Research CenterKirishitan Bunko LibraryMonumenta NipponicaAsian Human Resource Development Research CenterInstitute of Grief CareSemiconductor Research InstituteSophia University Institute of BioethicsHuman Resource Center for International CooperationSophia Institute of International RelationsInstitute for Inclusive CommunityInstitute of Island SustainabilitySophia Institute for Human SecurityThe Sophia Research Organization has two research divisions: The Research In-stitutes Division with 12 institutes; and the Project Research Division with three.
