Campus NewsSophia University Hosts the International Negotiation Competition 2019 and PON Global #01Over four days from July 5, Sophia Uni-versity played host to the International Negotiation Competition for Law Stu-dents 2019. In this competition, held around the world since 1988, teams of law students negotiate over three rounds to determine the world champion. This year, 28 teams from 26 countries took part, with victory ultimately going to the team from the University of New South Wales, Australia. Tetsuo Morishita, Professor in the Grad-uate School of Law at Sophia University, explains, “Negotiations are frequently conducted across national borders, and many difcult problems arise in negoti-ations between different cultures. This competition was started by professors of law schools in the U.S. and other countries to provide students with cross-cultural negotiation opportunities. Japa-nese universities have taken part in this competition since 2007.” The team representing Japan was selected from the university with the best result in the English negotiat-ing section of the domestic Inter-collegiate Negotiation Competition. This time Japan was represented by Kyoto University, with Sophia participating as the host team. “The Intercollegiate Negotiation Competition has been held in Japan since 2002, and I have been in-volved since the inaugural event as a member of the steering com-mittee,” Morishita explains. “Tradi-tionally, Japanese universities have not taught negotiation, but inspired by the vibrant state of negotiation studies and training overseas, there have been increasing opportunities to teach nego-tiation in recent years in Japan. Not only Japanese universities, but also univer-sities elsewhere in the Asia-Pacic re-gion, such as Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Mongolia, Korea, and China, par-ticipate in this competition in Japan.”Sophia offers negotiation programs for businesspersons, too. PON Global, the world’s foremost negotiation training pro-gram offered by the Program on Nego-tiation at Harvard Law School, was held for working professionals at Sophia over three days in September and the expe-rienced instructor from Harvard Law School conducted the world’s leading training program. Professional Studies, Sophia’s new pro-gram for working professionals com-mencing in 2020, will also offer semi-nars on negotiation.“Negotiation is a skill required in plenty of elds, including business, politics, law, and even in daily life,” elaborates the professor. “It is not something that can be done alone, but rather an activ-ity conducted with others to create new value or solve problems. This is linked to the Sophia philosophy of ‘Men and Women for Others, with Others.’ I hope that more people develop negotiation skills and create new value by working with people of different backgrounds to themselves.”Professor Tetsuo MorishitaPON Global, held in SeptemberInternational Negotiation Competition 20193
