an engineer that can anticipate future trends and contribute to creating a better world through devel-oping innovative technological products. Enrolled in the Faculty of Science and Technology, I am taking courses in environmental science which are making me conscious of the need for being eco-friendly in whatever we do. As to my thoughts on environmental conservation in Japan, I am par-ticularly impressed by the large number of electric cars on the streets, and by the country’s recycling system. Also, I feel lucky to have the opportunity to experience Japan’s unique culture, and observe people in their daily life. When I go back home, I will put to good use the knowledge and experience gained during my time at Sophia. After completing my bachelor’s program at Istanbul Bilgi University, I would like to come back to Japan and obtain a master’s degree here.y adventure started when I was a child, with a fascination for the cars, motorcycles, and other machines we had at home. I was always breaking things just so I could x them. At the time, I thought to myself, “Why shouldn’t I also design machines?” I then decided to enter a university with a good engineering program, and that’s why I ended up at Bilgi University double majoring in mechanical and industrial engineering. After my rst year there, I became aware of the importance of management, economics, data science, and mar-keting and thought an exchange program would broaden my horizons. Sophia impressed me with its wide range of courses in these areas. Studying at Sophia has both deepened my interest in those elds, and strengthened my com-mitment to acquiring knowledge of them, which is essential to achieving my goals and realizing my dreams. I believe it is helping me towards becoming MIstanbul Bilgi University, a relatively new school founded in 1996, is Sophia University’s very rst partner institu-tion in Turkey. It currently offers over 200 courses each semester, and all classes, other than those in the Law and Health Science departments, are conducted in English. BACKGROUNDAnil Celebi➣ UNIVERSITY: Istanbul Bilgi University➣ MAJOR: Mechanical and Industrial Engineering ➣ PERIOD OF STUDY AT SOPHIA: Spring and autumn, 2019from “TURKEY” to“SOPHIA”from “SOPHIA” to“SWITZERLAND”and NGOs to address social and global issues. I realized that all entities, regardless of their size and level of expertise, are related to global issues. This nding made me recognize that local artistic and cultural activities, which I am interested in, can also contribute to solving such problems.I chose to study at the Faculty of Liberal Arts since I believe it is a place where I can learn more about art and culture in relation to other disciplines; in particular, sociology. My experience in Geneva deepened my interest, as I hope to be involved in the planning of local art festivals and other cultural events, and in doing so, contribute to addressing social issues and improving quality of life.wanted to see with my own eyes how the activi-ties of international organizations are actually linked to our everyday lives, and the Study Visit to International Organizations in Geneva gave me the chance to do exactly that. What impressed me the most was UNICEF’s involvement in a variety of issues surrounding children born into modern society, ranging from poverty to online bullying. In search of solutions to those problems, UNICEF is working with the private sector, drawing on the rich expertise found there.Throughout the program, I learned that not only UNICEF but also many other international orga-nizations form partnerships with private companies IThe Study Visit to International Organizations in Geneva is a practical training program open to all Sophia University students, and in 2019 was held September 6-15. Participants stay in Geneva, Switzerland, where the headquarters of many international organizations are located, and learn about their roles and activities through lectures from, and direct discussions with, organization staffers, while deepening their understanding of various global issues.BACKGROUNDReika Mihara➣ DEPARTMENT: Faculty of Liberal Arts➣ YEAR: Freshman27Voice
