Historical Studies of Christianity in Japan, with aUnique and Global PerspectiveChristianity was introduced to Japan in the mid 16th century, by Francis Xavier. Until the late 19th century Japanese Catholics, called Kirishitan or “hidden Christians,” were at various times either authorized, tacitly accepted, or banned at the whim of the authorities. Particularly in periods of repression, the Kirishitan often drew attention to themselves as they steadfastly adhered to their faith. The Catholicism that took root in Japan generated its own distinct culture, with a unique history. We spoke to Professor Shinzo Kawamura, who is also a Jesuit priest, about the joy of discovering the history of the Kirishitan.10Research
