However, the true value of the SPSF’s interdisciplinary na-ture, which is centered upon building a variety of visions of a sustainable future, lies in the fact that shared courses are available to all students regardless of their specialization. “In the first and second years of the program, students take courses that encourage them to develop an awareness of what sustainability entails, and of the issues involved in realizing a sustainable future,” explains the professor. “Third- and fourth-year students then take courses that allow them to use the expertise they have developed in their field to focus on a single topic from a multidisciplinary standpoint, and collaborate on searches for holistic solutions. Overall, the program is designed to prepare future leaders for the coming global society by enabling them to develop sensibilities and thought processes that grant them the flexibility to transcend established frameworks in their core specialization.”The SPSF’s establishment marks a new chapter in Sophia’s history of global education. “Ever since our university’s engineering. This is why at the SPSF we have been able to coordinate seamlessly between four faculties and six depart-ments, which is a rare feat among programs for international students both in and outside Japan. Furthermore, every field has courses conducted in English, allowing all international students, not just those in the SPSF, to easily incorporate them into their studies.” SPSF courses originate in six departments: the Departments of Education, Sociology, Economics, and Global Studies will all open in 2020; the Department of Journalism in 2021; and the Department of Management in 2022. Prospective students will specify their desired department and field of study when applying, then after enrollment take courses to establish a base in a specific field and obtain a bachelor’s de-gree that corresponds to their specialization. While SPSF students develop their specialization in the department of their chosen field, they can customize their curriculum by taking courses that align with their interests in the five other departments, or in those outside the pro-gram. Students with sufficient linguistic ability can also take courses conducted in Japanese.
