Campus newsSophia-Arrupe International Resi-dence, Sophia’s second accommoda-tion facility for both international and Japanese students, is now open. Just a minute’s walk from Shinanomachi Sta-tion and a ten-minute commute to the Yotsuya campus, this new building is named after Fr. Pedro Arrupe, the former Superior General of the Society of Jesus. “The residence”, explains Chancellor Fr. Tsutomu Sakuma, S.J., “was built as a place where international and Japanese students studying at Sophia University can live together nurturing friendships, respecting and inspiring one another, and in doing so, also acquire the spirit of Sophia ‘for Others, with Others.’”Nine stories high, the facility employs a shared house format. It has 180 rooms and is well equipped with conveniences, including a conguration of “common liv-ing” areas each of which can be shared by several dwelling units, along with a multipurpose area, two study rooms, a theater room, and a sports studio. In addition, on the rst oor, Sophia-Arrupe provides a prayer room that is available to residents of any religion. There is also a rooftop terrace to encourage relaxation and exchange among residents.Since April this year, thanks to the assistance of Deloitte Tohmatsu Ven-ture Support Co., Ltd., an exclusive pro-gram has been implemented in which all student residents in the new facil-ity can participate. This program was designed with an aim of promoting global citizens equipped with a sense of purpose embodying the spirit of “Sophia - Bringing the World Together,” and nur-turing “a clear personal vision with the ability to create one’s own future while cooperating with various peers” amid a society that is growing increasingly complex and diverse. Thus its mission truly bets the name of the residence. Two semesters long, the program com-prises a rst semester that centers on lectures and workshops, followed by a second semester focused on putting projects into practice.
