Koso, Professor HirayamaOn November 29, 2018, Sophia University and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Stud-ies (the Graduate Institute) concluded an agreement for a new ve-year pro-gram. Known as the “3+2 Program,” it will enable Sophia students to earn a Bach-elor’s Degree at Sophia University and then a Master’s at the Graduate Institute in ve years instead of the usual six.Located in the heart of Geneva, the Graduate Institute is renowned world-wide for its numerous alumni excelling in the elds of international cooperation and diplomatic services. Its broad range of degree courses, including Interna-tional Relations, History, Economics, Humanities, and Development Studies, attracts students from across the globe. In addition, a wide variety of internship opportunities are available thanks to the Graduate Institute’s proximity to the head ofces of numerous international organizations and global corporations.Deepening this commitment, the 3+2 Program is Sophia’s rst attempt to enable its students to earn both Bach-elor’s and Master’s Degrees in ve years, in partnership with a European educa-tional institution.Three Sophia University Personages Honored by the Kingdom of Cambodia#04At the 25th meeting of the Interna-tional Coordinating Committee for the Safeguarding and Development of the Historic Site of Angkor, held in Siem Reap, the Cambodian Minister of Cul-ture and Fine Arts, Phoeurng Sackona, on December 4, 2018 conferred honors upon Professor Yoshiaki Ishizawa along with two fellow Sophia luminaries. The awards recognize the trio’s years of service in the restoration of Angkor Wat’s western approach, as well as their training of Cambodians specializing in the ongoing work on the UNESCO World Heritage temple complex.The three receiving honors were Professor Yoshiaki Ishizawa, Director of the Sophia Asia Center for Research and Human Development, who was for many years responsible for the resto-ration work and training at the Angkor Wat site; the former Chancellor of So-phia School Corporation, Fr. Toshiaki Koso, S.J., who oversaw the restora-tion of the western approach to Angkor Wat; and Visiting Professor to the Sophia Asia Center for Research and Human Development, Zenkichi Hirayama, who led the planning of the restoration work. The current western approach project is scheduled to be completed in 2020.Launch of New Five-Year Program with Geneva’s Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies#03About the 3+2 ProgramAfter meeting certain criteria and fullling re-quirements, Sophia students will be able to earn Bachelor’s Degrees from Sophia Univer-sity and Master’s Degrees from the Graduate Institute with three years of attendance at So-phia University followed by two years at the Graduate Institute. Enrollees will be treated as exchange students in their rst year at the Graduate Institute; thus the courses taken there will be approved by Sophia and counted to-wards its graduation requirements. The Gradu-ate Institute will also recognize credits from the rst year there toward completion of two-year Master’s Programs. As for tuition for their rst year in Geneva, students will be responsible for covering Sophia University fees; for the second year, they will be eligible to apply for nancial aid from The Graduate Institute.5Campus news
