We wish to create life-changing opportuni-ties for them through our programs.”Bangkok is a strategic location in the region, where global enterprises and international organizations base their Asia-Pacic headquarters. The capi-tal city offers proximity to other ASEAN countries and, in particular, is a gate-way to the Mekong region. Sophia GED chose it as their base of operations in anticipation that the company will be ac-tive not only in Thailand, but also in the Mekong/ASEAN region. “The service learning program we plan to offer in collaboration with Xavi-er Learning Community, a higher ed-ucation institution established by the Jesuit Society in Chiang Rai, Northern Thailand, is our showcase for cultivat-ing the awareness in the next genera-tion required for realizing sustainable fu-tures,” enthuses Dr. Hirosato. “We are al-so planning study tours aimed at giving corporate executives and local govern-ment ofcials a better grasp of the ASE-AN region, which is undergoing rapid transformation.”Sophia Global Education and Discov-ery Co., Ltd.(Sophia GED) began to op-erate for the Sophia ASEAN Hub Cen-ter, one of Sophia University’s overseas ofces in Bangkok, Thailand from May 1. Sophia GED will primarily design and deliver study tours and service learn-ing programs, in which Japanese stu-dents learn alongside peers from ASE-AN member states, and provide sup-port for ASEAN students to study at So-phia and other universities in Japan. A main goal of Sophia GED is to cultivate human resources focused on contribut-ing towards shared international objec-tives, such as the Sustainable Develop-ment Goals (SDGs), while simultaneous-ly paving the way to a more integrated and connected ASEAN community.Dr. Yasushi Hirosato, Managing Di-rector of Sophia GED and Professor at the Center for Global Education and Dis-covery, comments: “Currently there are more than 50 Japanese university ofc-es in Bangkok, but many of these op-erate on limited budgets largely fund-ed by Japanese government subsidies and university budgets with only a few obtaining corporate status.
