Campus NewsSophia and African Development Bank Conclude MoU for Academic Cooperation#01On March 8, 2019, Sophia Univer-sity concluded a Memorandum of Un-derstanding for academic cooperation with the African Development Bank.Sophia President Yoshiaki Teru-michi and AfDB Senior Vice President Charles Boamah attended the signing ceremony held at the bank’s headquar-ters in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The MoU outlines an agreement to organize joint lectures, seminars, and symposiums as well as establish training programs im-plemented by AfDB for Sophia students. This is the rst comprehensive agree-ment of its kind that AfDB has concluded with an educational institution in Japan.AfDB is a multilateral development -nance organization whose mission is to ght poverty and improve living condi-tions in Africa through promoting invest-ment in economic and social develop-ment projects and programs. In 2012, it opened its Asia repre-sentative ofce in Tokyo, and in Jan-uary 2015 the AfDB Tokyo ofce con-cluded its rst MOU with an educational institution in Japan, Sophia University, for the co-organization of student intern-ships at AfDB Tokyo ofce, as well as collaborative lectures, seminars, and symposiums relating to international cooperation. Building on the success of these activities, an MoU with the bank’s head ofce was re-alized this year.Considered the world’s last rap-idly growing mega-market, Af-rica is increasing its presence in the global arena. In light of this and in anticipation of Sophia’s current students excelling glob-ally as leading members of soci-ety in the coming decades, the university is promoting educa-tional and research exchanges, offering students opportunities to gain experience in this notable region. Other such initiatives encompass MoUs for academic cooperation with African organizations; promotion of Africa-re-lated research; the hosting of “Sophia University Africa Weeks” to promote un-derstanding and deepen cooperation with the African region; implementation of short learning programs in Africa; and the establishment of partnerships with African academic institutions through-out the Jesuit network. Sophia University also welcomes Af-rican students on AfDB Japan African Dream Scholarships, an energy sector- focused initiative, with plans to imple-ment further exchange programs for stu-dents from African countries in the years to come. © AfDB3
