Students enrich their learning and extend their networks throughout the globe.Sophia University offers a wide variety of learning opportunities for students from both Japan and abroad. Here are some stories of students who face challenges daily while having priceless experiences.STUDENTS CONNECTINGWITH THE WORLDfrom “ETHIOPIA” to“SOPHIA”The two years it took for the application to be approved were tough times, but JAR helped me to nd work at Sakae Casting in Hachioji, in a eld where I can make use of my qualications. There I conduct research on water quality under Dr. Yoshinari Tanaka of the Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies. In metal processing, the quality of wastewater is a major concern, so Sakae Casting provides me with nancial assis-tance to attend graduate school to further my water quality research. The company does not ask for anything in return for their funding, however, out of gratitude I intend to share my ndings with them. After graduation, I hope to land a job as an environmental researcher, in which I can undertake projects that harness my knowledge of marketing research and science.y homeland, Ethiopia, is a nation com-prised of around 80 different tribes. I come from the largest tribe, Oromo, which makes up 35% of the population. The Oromo people are peaceful, however, internal conict has been endless: my father perished in such hostilities in 1992, when I was an elementary school student. The smallest tribe represents less than six percent of the population, yet dominates the military and political system. As a science teacher, I was harassed and unfairly dis-missed from my post due to my ethnicity. It was exactly at that time that I was looking for an opportunity to escape, and a project I was en-gaged in with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Oromia Education Bureau allowed me to come to Japan. I then submitted a refugee application with the assistance of the Japan Association of Refugees (JAR). MSophia’s Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies inculcates in students a sense of mission to address the world’s environmental issues and thereby fulll the Sustainable Development Goals. The school’s dening feature is its fusion of the social and natural sciences, creating a stimulating environment for domestic and foreign students from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds, including mid-career professionals.BACKGROUNDOumer Abdulahi Kassim➣ DEPARTMENT: Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies28Voice
