It brings me joy to see our faculty members and staff collaborating with a shared awareness of such a spirit, as well as so many of our graduates exceling in their careers, “working for others” in a manner supported by their learning at Sophia. Through its Jesuit network and partnerships, Sophia University has in recent years increasingly engaged with Catholic universities worldwide. For example, there are coordinated efforts by our uni-versity and the International Association of Jesuit Universities (IAJU) to launch a collaborative program that transcends academic fields. We are taking the initiative to design this new program, based on the theme “multicultural coexistence,” that accentu-ates the shared goal of Jesuits to bring solutions to worldwide issues in four areas: education, environ-ment, poverty, and ethics. I am also excited to see new networks being established with both Japanese and overseas universities through programs aimed at enhancing human security and multicultural coexis-tence, utilizing an online, transnational, and interac-tive educational method. Such an endeavor was made possible not only with ideas from Sophia alone; it was actualized through meetings with our partner univer-sities, evincing mutual trust as well as a commitment to the positive advancement of technologies. As Vice President for Global Academic Affairs, I intend to further enhance programs at Sophia that continue to foster global citizens who can “work for and with others.” Miki SugimuraVice President for Global Academic Affairs;Professor, Department ofEducationSophia&I2
