In his address, Grandi covered subjects such as the role of education in refu-gee protection and support in Japan.Eight Japanese universities includ-ing Sophia participate in the Refugee Higher Education Program (RHEP), whereby each year they accept refu-gees recommended by the UNHCR as full-scholarship students. Follow-ing Grandi’s lecture, a discussion was held by those who had graduated from Japanese universities through the pro-gram. Afterwards, a career seminar was held for students hoping to work at international organizations, followed by a lecture on how to apply to interna-tional agencies and other advice from staffers of both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and UNHCR Representation in Japan.Sophia University signed an edu-cational collaboration agreement with UNHCR Representation in Japan in October 2014, resulting in exchange through education and research ac-tivities, assistance with internship pro-grams, and joint hosting of public edu-cational events. Then in June 2016, the agreement was expanded to include the RHEP. Of Sophia’s many ties with international organizations, its links with the UNHCR are among the closest.Sophia University, on November 27, 2017, conferred the Degree of Honor-ary Doctorate upon His Royal High-ness the Grand Duke Henri of Luxem-bourg in recognition of his contribu-tions in the areas of the environment, science, and humanitarian aid world-wide. Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra and His Excellency Archbish-op Jean-Claude Hollerich, former Vice President of Sophia University, as well as other representatives of Japan and Luxembourg attended the ceremony. In his acceptance speech, Grand Duke Henry expressed his gratitude, along with his wish to share with his na-tion the joy in receiving such an hon-or. He mentioned that Father Dahlman, one of the three founders of Sophia Uni-versity, had a strong connection to Lux-embourg. Grand Duke Henri also ex-pressed his delight at the friendship built between Sophia University and his country. The Grand Duke stated, “Universities should be places not only to advance specialized studies, but also where one can experience diversity in a multicul-tural environment and encounter differ-ent ways of thinking.” He pointed out that both Sophia University, located in the heart of Tokyo, and the University of Luxembourg, which attracts students from across Europe and around the world, boast excellent environments, and expressed hope for even deeper relations between the two institutions. The Grand Duke also emphasized that international cooperation is of great importance in resolving issues arising from dramatic social, econom-ic, and environmental change driv-en by globalization. In conclusion, the Grand Duke stated his strong support for the way Sophia University, with its educational philosophy of “for others, with others,” is fostering leaders of the next generation to build a fairer world. Campus news4
