Sophia Magazine vol.7 / SUMMER 2018

ince my high school days I have been inter-ested in physics, especially the laws govern-ing energy and motion. Hoping to contribute to the development of my country as an engineer, I majored in mechanical engineering at a Malay-sian university. I also took Japanese classes, as I believe that technologies from advanced nations like Japan are needed for development in my own country. In 2016, I transferred to Sophia University due to my great interest in the research of Presi-dent Yoshiaki Terumichi into high-speed rail, and the research conducted jointly by Central Japan Railway Company, commonly known as JR Tokai, and Sophia. I hoped to gain practical knowledge in high-speed rail development. Having been able to do research on basic indus-trial mechanics and the relationship of movement and energy, from the very basics to advanced level, is very meaningful for my future. I graduated in March, and from September I will start studying for my master’s degree at Southwest Jiaotong Uni-versity in China. I intend to become a high-speed rail engineer and contribute to the opening of a high-speed railway link between Singapore and Malaysia. Once that project is completed, it will make the work of business people in Malaysia so much more efcient. Going forward, I would like to increase my knowledge of marketing while study-ing engineering in hopes of bringing practical benets of technology to society. S➣ DEPARTMENT: Department of Engineering and Applied Sciences ➣ PERIOD OF STUDY AT SOPHIA: From August 2016 to March 2018Faiz Adli Bin HishamThe Faculty of Science and Technology in 2012 established two English-language degree programs, Green Science and Green Engineering, which have attracted a growing number of foreign students and researchers. These programs aim to train students who have ambitions to solve global environmental issues. BACKGROUNDack in high school, I had a chance to inter-view an Edo sarasa (stencil printing on fab-ric) master. I had anticipated hearing about the difculties of nding successors to continue the tradition, but what I found was unexpected: the reality of just how hard it is to make a living from traditional crafts. Through this experience, I de-cided that I wanted to be involved in listening to business people in the community and around the world, and thinking about how to solve the various problems they face. That is why I chose to study economics. In the summer of my second year, I found out about an internship program at Fuji Xerox Asia Pa-cic in Singapore, where they hold workshops to learn about the local area and solve its problems, and decided to apply. Once I arrived at the com-pany, I learned along with other interns about the diverse cultures of Singapore, and the company’s education system. I was impressed that we had the opportunity, through interviews with employ-ees, to come up with ideas on issues concerning staff training. During my internship I felt that in the multicultural nation of Singapore nobody senses they are different from others. Singapore is a hub country that is made up of major world cultures, and this place made me reect deeply on why Japan has not become that kind of hub itself. One of my goals is to become a consultant helping to connect the traditional crafts and leading technol-ogies of Japan to the world. In the next two years I will continue my research, including my seminar group, and make use of internships and other op-portunities to look at various other issues too.B➣ DEPARTMENT: Department of Economics➣ YEAR: Junior ➣ DESTINATION: Fuji Xerox Asia Pacic Pte Ltd➣ LOCATION: Singapore➣ WHEN: Three weeks in Summer 2017Ayumi HondaSophia University offers courses in which students can participate in internships at global corporations, international organizations, and media groups based on institutional agreements. Through these experiences, students may discover both the focus of their studies and their potential role on the global stage. BACKGROUNDfrom “MALAYSIA” to“SOPHIA”from “SOPHIA” to“SINGAPORE”29Voice
