Global Challenges: the Role of Human SecuritySophia University hosted a special lecture titled “Global Challenges: The Role of Human Security” by UN Secretary-General António Guterres on December 14, 2017, during his first visit to Japan as Secretary-General. After the lec-ture, Sophia University also facilitated a dialogue between the Secretary-General and 30 students from Japanese uni-versities linked with the UN Academic Impact program. The event was co-sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UN Information Centre in Tokyo.The event began with President Yoshiaki Terumichi welcoming the Secretary-General, and saying that the Sec-retary-General’s message on Human Security will provide “insight on how we should envision our future.”Then, Professor Daisaku Higashi, Deputy Director of the Human Resources Center for International Coopera-tion at Sophia University, introduced the Secretary-Gen-eral, who served as Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002 and UN High Commissioner for Refugees from 2005 to 2015. He also noted that the Secretary-General obtained overwhelming support from UN member states after he presented his vision and ideas for action to the UN General Assembly during the selection process for Secre-tary-General in 2016.In his special lecture, the Secretary-General presented five key challenges that the world is facing: (1) nuclear threats, including the North Korea nuclear crisis; (2) more complex military conflicts and civil wars; (3) climate 9
