to “human-to-human cooperation.” The key is building “bor-derless relations of trust” at the personal level. At present, these human networks are expanding not only in Cambodia but across the entire Southeast Asian region as well. Since 2014, the Sophia Asia Center for Research and Human Development has carried out a project in which those in charge of preserving and restoring cultural heritage sites in Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Japan, meet twice a year to exchange local know-how. The project to improve the equipment for the restoration of the Western Causeway of Angkor Wat was implemented as a Japanese government official development aid (ODA) project. At the Western Causeway, Phase I Restoration (100 meters on the Eastern side) was completed in 2007 by Cambodians who were studying with us. Phase 2 Restoration (100 meters on the Western side) started in 2014. The main difference in this phase is that the Cambodian specialists who learned from us now give instruction to Cambodians. Thanks to the Phase 2 Restoration, they will get substantially closer to the realiza-tion of the goal: “Conservation and restoration of the Khmer heritage site should be carried out by Cambodians for Cambo-dia.” We will continue to take up new challenges to contribute to Asia with our school philosophy of rendering services to others in mind.Born in 1937.
