Students gather from all over the world to extend their network to the rest of the globe.Sophia University offers a wide variety of learning opportunities for students from both Japan and abroad. Here are some examples of students who face challenges daily while gaining precious experiences.Hugh Nettlebeckuring my rst trip to Japan, a homestay in Himeji, I fell in love with the people and cul-ture of Japan. I was impressed with how people co-operate to achieve a goal and how considerate they are. This was just after I had graduated from high school. It was that trip that gave me the im-petus to take on a double major, psychology and Japanese. I had come for just a holiday, but the people were so friendly and the culture so interest-ing that I felt I had to learn the language so that I could communicate better and understand more about Japan. At Sophia, my two courses, Intensive Japanese and Business Japanese, and the home-work consume almost all of my time. What is spe-cial about Sophia is that, since many students from all over the world are studying languages, there are many chances to make friends and practice the language you are studying. From my time here I will take away an incredible boost to my Japa-nese language ability, improved social skills, and a greater appreciation for all that my parents have done. I hope to return to Japan for a post-graduate degree, to gain uency in Japanese, and to work as a translator or interpreter in the movie industry after I complete my undergraduate degree back at the University of Adelaide.D➣ UNIVERSITY: University of Adelaide➣ DEPARTMENT: Psychological Sciences/Languages➣ YEAR: Junior➣ MAJORS: Psychology and Japanese➣ PERIOD OF STAY AT SOPHIA: April 2015 to March 2016Considered one of the world’s top universities, The University of Adelaide, which was established in 1874, signed a student exchange agreement with Sophia University in August 2013. Due to my father’s business, I spent three years in Bang-kok during junior high school. There I saw poverty and a very different culture with my own eyes. It was those experiences that lead to such a dream. Since then, I’ve wanted to see more of the reality of developing countries rsthand, so I undertook the Learn from Africa Program. I will never forget the innocent eyes of the children who gathered for mass in church at the university, and I never ex-pected that the university students there to be so deeply interested in Japan. Regarding my classes there, learning about Africa in depth, especially from teachers with strong local perspectives, made a deep impression. I was also fortunate in having encounters with ambassadors, the direc-tor of the Japan International Cooperation Agency, and other people from international organizations while attending the program. I am now motivated to take classes at Sophia University taught by profes-sors with experience in international organizations. Extensive opportunities for student exchange are also appealing. I am a junior, so I would like to con-tinue my studies in developing countries and to set out for a bigger stage while striving to achieve my dream.MThe “Learn from Africa” program enables students to learn the history of and present situation in Central Africa mainly through lectures and hands-on activities provided in Africa after completing preliminary training. Students visit various places, including facilities related to industrial development, agriculture, and local schools, as well as a beverage factory, an art and cultural center, the Embassy of Japan, and ofces of international cooperation organizations. They also stay in Paris for three days during the program to visit Africa-related facilities.BACKGROUNDfrom “AUSTRALIA” to“SOPHIA”from “SOPHIA” to“CAMEROON”25Voice
