Slater has been teaching at Sophia University since 1997. In over 30 years as a cultural anthropologist, he has been listening closely to the voices of ordinary people in Japan. His research has included social class structure, youth culture, labor and employment, education, and more recently, social movements. He adapted a new and exciting pedagogy in the wake of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, tsunami, and radiation leakage. This new style of learning allows students to become more en-gaged in society through volunteer work while doing meaningful academic research. Research
