─ 272 ─4) The student must know that the Graduate Program consists of two main pillars of the Peace Cooperation-Peacebuilding Studies and the Sustainable Development/Social Educational Development Studies, and selects courses that are suitable to the pillar of studies of choice. The student is advised to decide on the supervisor for the Master's Thesis/Research Paper in the first Autumn semester and follows the guidance given by the supervisor to select and register the necessary courses. The supervisor can be selected from the core full-time professors of the Graduate Program. 5) The student must attend the Guidance Session that takes place at the beginning of each academic year. Information on research guidance and Master's Thesis/Research Paper, is provided in the Guidance Session. 6) The student must take the Research Guidance course each semester starting with the first Autumn semester and obtain a passing grade. Please refer to "1. Courses, Credits and Number of Courses" for details on the number of courses required for Research Guidance. 7) Please consult the supervisor for selecting courses before registering them. 8) When submitting the Thesis/Research Paper, please make sure that the theme was decided on the basis of relevant theories and research methods, and that the proposal had been reviewed with respect to the necessary research materials, thesis outlines and the objectives of the study. 9) The requirements for graduation are to have obtained at least 30 credits on the basis of the guidance 1) to 8) above, and to have passed the oral examination on the Thesis/Research Paper submitted in accordance with the procedures laid out. 10) In accordance with the university’s academic regulations, the credits earned in the graduate school in and out of Japan prior to the enrollment in the Graduate Program can be accepted as those that are required for graduation (recognition of the credits prior to the enrollment). Furthermore, the credits earned in the graduate school in the exchange program can be requested to be accepted as those that are required for graduation. In either case, a request should be submitted to the Academic Center. The Graduate Program will examine the request and decide whether or not to approve it. The number of credits allowed will be calculated on the basis of the university’s credit system. The maximum number of total credits calculated and approved in this manner is 10 credits. 11) Any other points that are not clear should be checked against the university’s academic regulations and the rules governing the granting of academic degrees. They may also be clarified with the Graduate Program Office, the supervisor, the Graduate Program Director and so forth. (Students for early graduation) In addition to the above, the following procedures also apply. 1) The student who wishes to graduate in one year (early graduation) in accordance with the university’s academic regulation Article 21, Item 3 must consult with the Director of the Graduate Program in International Cooperation Studies by the second Monday of April in the first year. The regulation referred above defines “an outstanding academic achievement” as the student who has attained 3.8 or higher GPA and received a B grade or higher for the Graduate Thesis/Research Paper from the Assessment Committee. 2) In case the student decides to annul the plan to graduate early, the student must submit a request to annul early graduation (using the format provided) to the Director of the Graduate Program in International Cooperation Studies (the Program Office) by the first Monday of November in the first year. In that case, the regular two-year program requirements will apply. Note: The formats are available from the Program Office.
