Faculty of Economics

Modern society is a huge network where people relate to each other through economic activities and aim to maximize their satisfaction. Economics is a discipline that pursues realization of people’s wealth in various regions and countries. In order to achieve this object, it is necessary to stimulate activities of companies that produce goods and services, consumption of individuals and the distribution system through the functions of market mechanism. To make the market mechanism work well, however, effective social and legal systems are essential. Therefore, the range of education and research that the faculty aims to pursue is not limited to the study of production, distribution and exchange of goods and services. We also want to educate students on many other social issues such as global environment, social security and overseas assistance, and other issues related to business management like organization, strategy, finance and accounting, and marketing. The faculty also strives to equip students with a global mindset as well as social responsibility and ethical values. Thus it aims to develop human resources who thrive both domestically and internationally with a wide range of fundamental and specialized expertise and problem-solving skills.

Department of Economics

The educational aim of the department is to foster students with an ability to analyze various problems our society faces on a daily basis from an economic perspective. Our students are expected to obtain analytical skills to explore social and economic problems and to acquire advanced academic knowledge and broad insight. With such expertise in their hands students will be able to play leading roles in the international arena after their graduation. In order to achieve this goal, the curriculum of the department first focuses on the study of microeconomics and macroeconomics: the former studies the market mechanism and its limitation, and the latter deals with nationwide economic concerns such as budget deficit and economic fluctuation. We also provide the educational framework to investigate contemporary problems in our society; for example, international trade, economic development, urban problems such as housing and transportation, the issues related to the system of medicine and pension, and environmental problems. The department maintains its traditional policy of keeping each class small, which makes it possible to provide instructions most appropriate to individual students. By providing tutorial seminars based on lecturer’s research theme as well as additional courses taught in English, the department aims to foster international leaders with professional skills of Economics.

Department of Management

Companies play an important role in modern society. The department aims to equip students with academic expertise in management of business activities, and to develop human resources who understand business management from various views of social relations. On the basis of the academic policy of the university, the department offers a curriculum to obtain a wide range of knowledge and broad insight as well as expertise in modern management. In the first year, students are expected to learn the purpose and the basic framework of business management in relation to modern society, and then each student chooses an area of their own interest to learn more specialized courses. The department offers three model courses through which students gain their understanding of management; “business administration”, “marketing” and “accounting”. Through this system, the department aims to produce human resources, who can be business leaders in local and global contexts and can contribute to the society with management acumen.
