Regarding academic term system and timetable changes planned for the 2019 academic year

Based on our future vision, Grand Layout 2.0, Sophia University has undertaken various steps of reform to create a global campus and guarantee the quality of education. As a part of these steps, we will implement the following changes to the academic term system and timetable effective from the 2019 academic year.

With the aim of improving the international mobility of our students, Sophia will adopt a Semester/Quarter System* and set up a period that will be known as the “Sophia Quarter Abroad” to accommodate different patterns of studying abroad and to facilitate participation in overseas internships and other programs.

*A quarter system divides the academic year into four terms by halving the academic term under the conventional semester (two-term) system.

The new timetable will introduce 100-minute classes. We will maintain unchanged spring and summer recess periods to allow students to join short-term overseas programs and volunteer work or other activities while fulfilling criteria regarding the class hours required for the acquisition of credits. This will also make it possible to explore new ways of conducting classes.

Details of the new system will be announced on Loyola. An outline is provided below. The current term system and timetable will remain valid for the 2018 academic year.

1. Implementation of “Sophia Quarter Abroad”

A given number of quarter-length courses will be offered for specific terms in the 4-year curriculum (mainly in the spring semester, or 1Q and 2Q, of the junior year). This period, including the recess, will be called “Sophia Quarter Abroad,” during which students will be encouraged to participate in study abroad programs or to engage in practical learning experiences such as internships, as well as service learning. In order to accommodate this new component, Sophia will adopt a Semester/Quarter system.

Outline of the Semester/Quarter System

1) Students will be able to take a leave of absence or study abroad by the quarter. They will also be able to acquire credits by taking quarter-length courses before or after the overseas program (1Q or 2Q).

2) New study abroad programs as well as the renewed credit transfer system will be introduced in line with Sophia Quarter Abroad (to be decided).

3) Under the new system, both quarter-length and semester-length courses will be offered. For the time being, a limited number of courses will be offered for the duration of a quarter.

4) Under the new system, semester-length courses will be fourteen (14) weeks and quarter-length courses, half that length, or seven (7) weeks. Quarter-length courses may have class once a week (total of seven (7) classes) or twice a week (total of fourteen (14) classes)

5) Graduation and withdrawal will, in principle, continue to take place at the end of March (or the end of September).

6) When a student takes a leave of absence for a quarter, 1/4 of the 1-year tuition and fees will be reduced accordingly.

7) Course registration will be conducted and grade evaluation will be issued by the semester.

2. Introduction of 100-minute classes

Class duration will be changed from 90 minutes to 100 minutes; accordingly, the timetable shall be changed as follows:
