The United Nations Weeks at Sophia University

The programs will be held at Sophia University in observance of the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations on Oct 24, 2015

Sophia University offers opportunities to consider our global future through UN activities. The period from Monday Oct 12 to Saturday Oct 24, 2015 has been designated as The United Nations Week at Sophia. First held in 2014, this initiative is now taking place for the fourth time, and each year features a range of opportunities to consider our future and that of the world through UN activities. Between Oct 12 and 24, 2015 in observance of the 70th Anniversary the programs at Sophia University will include the special symposium featuring the keynote speaker, Director and Head of Office, Peacebuilding Support Office Ms. Mari Yamashita as well as two other women guest speakers who are the staffs of United Nations; the talk session as well as screening of the film hosted by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for refugees (UNHCR) focusing on the issues on refugees will be taking place.

Also on July 23, 2015 “Human Resources Center for International Cooperation” was established at Sophia University. The center cultivates next generation human resources who intend to contribute to the international community with the aspiration “Men and Women for Others, with Others”- the spirit of Sophia University. Sophia University has been offering the programs to reach understanding of the international cooperation in depth in corroboration with the international organizations and corporations such as World Food Programme (WFP), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAC), Asian Development Bank (ADB), African Development Bank (AfDB) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The center presently aims and will continue to support the human resources who wish to excel in the area of international contribution in the international organizations such as United Nations and other NGO as well as international corporations.

The program will include the following events

【1】70th Anniversary of the United Nations Special Symposium " Women who excel in the front line of United Nations and Their International Contributions”(Open to the public)

A keynote speech by Ms. Mari Yamashita, Director and Deputy Head of Office, Peacebuilding Support Office following by the panel discussion about active rolls of women and future in the field with two other guest speakers, the women staffs of United Nations.

【2】 10th UNHCR Refugee Film Festival -University Partners and the talk session (Open to the public)

Sophia University participates in 10th UNHCR Refugee Film Festival -University Partners
Screening of a film and talk session concerning the worldwide problems of refugees who lost their home due to the war and the domestic conflicts.

■Film Title:  “Loving Our Home, Syria, Forever”
Director Saori Fujii, Japan 2015/57 min/Documentary/Subtitle in Japanese and English
Content: About a Syrian who lost his home, his family and a place to return. Syria once abundant country turned into the world largest refugee country due to the conflicts. The film features Syrian people who wish to return to their own country despite of the war.

【3】International Organizations Out Reach Mission (Open to the Public)

Human resource representatives from nine international organizations will visit. The program is recommended for those who are interested in the career in the international organizations such as United Nations.

【4】United Nation Essay Contest Award Ceremony (Open to the public)

In observance of 70th Anniversary of United Nations the essay contest was held among the students of Sophia University. The theme for the essay was “Strong UN, Better World” proposing how the international communities shall challenge the problems of 21st century world together with United Nations. The winner will receive $1000 scholarship.

【5】NHK Japan Prize 50th Anniversary Symposium “Intercultural Understanding and Media. Connecting the World Now Through the Media”

NHK Japan Prize is the international contest which was established in 1965 aiming to earn cooperation and understanding of the media contents for the world education and its improvement. At the symposium the last year grand-prix prize winning program as well as this year’s winning program will be presented and the discussion concerning intercultural understanding and the roll of media with the program director will follow.
