講義概要
/Course description
This course is about “thinking.”  But why do we need a course about thinking, if day in and day out at home, at work and at play we are already doing a lot of thinking?  In fact, we might ask what the point is of making something that seems so natural to us the object of formal reflection – thinking about “thinking”?  In order to make an attempt at grasping this I have organized our course around various broad themes that pertain to our human condition – themes such as perception, reasoning, language, dreaming, and emotion.  Within these thematic groupings we will discuss and write about texts that engage us in the kinds of thinking processes that we use both in our everyday lives and the life of the university.

Perception: what does it mean to see?
Reasoning: what does it mean to think critically?
Language: what does it mean to speak and write?
Dreaming: what do dreams tell us about thinking?

The keywords for this course are reading, writing, and discussion.  Since this is primarily a discussion-centered class, faithful attendance and participation will be crucial to making it a success for each of us individually and for all of us as a group.  As a result, attendance will be taken every time we meet.  Moreover, because writing is an indispensable part of thinking through the kinds of issues we will encounter in our daily readings and classroom discussions, we will be doing a good deal of formal (and informal) writing for every class.
