講義概要
/Course description
The general purpose of this course is to encourage the students to acquire a silkroadic way of thinking in order to understand better the contributions of the different Mahayana Buddhist traditions and the contributions of their dharmalogians and practitioners to world religious traditions. Buddhism cannot be studied apart from the cultures, societies, economies and languages of specific peoples. This is why, in the first place, the course invites the students to study present-day Japanese Buddhist traditions. The course will then proceed to promote deeper understanding of the great diversity within contemporary Japanese Buddhist traditions (doctrinal, practical, artistic, architectural and medicinal facets). For that purpose, the course will go back in time using a unique type of periodization: the rhythm of construction, destruction and reconstruction of the Great Buddha of Nara, in order to outline the silkroadic dimension of Japanese Buddhism. The course emphasizes the similarities and differences between Chinese and Japanese Buddhism without neglecting Indian and Korean influences. Finally, the course offers an in-depth study of one of the most important prayers of Mahayana Buddhism: the Heart Sutra.
