講義概要 ／Course description	The aim of this course is to provide a detailed picture of the religious landscape in contemporary Japan. The course is divided in two parts: in the first half, we will look at what composes the landscape, namely the pre-modern religious traditions and the new religious movements. We will also consider academic concepts that help us to understand the way religion is practiced today in Japan. In the second half, we will zoom on specific developments that have colored the Japanese religious landscape since the last century. Such topics include, for example, the globalization of new religious movements, the media coverage of religious groups’ involvement in criminal activities, and the recent popularity of alternative therapies.
