Religion, Conflict and Violence |
講義概要 /Course description |
Some observe that there has been an alarming global increase in religiously-motivated violence in recent years. Others say that violence has been an intrinsic part of human nature since the beginning of human history. In either case, the study of religion seems to be a key to address the problem of human violence. In this course, we will first examine specific manifestations of violence in various religious traditions such as Christianity, Islam and Buddhism. Later, we will also look into general theories of religious violence presented by Mark Juergensmeyer, Rene Girard and Georges Bataille. The goal of this course is to deepen our understanding of the nature of religion as well as of human violence by examining their close relationship. |
