講義概要
/Course description
India is the largest nation of the subcontinent of South Asia, and it is also a nation with an extremely long and tumultuous history dating back many thousands of years. During these many centuries the nation has given rise to an astonishing diversity of thinkers, artists, musicians, story-tellers, and poets, and it is a nation that has often been described as an ocean of philosophy, religion,
myth, legend, and culture, as well as music, dance, drama, and romance. In this course the student will be introduced to the religion and culture of ancient India. Starting with the Indus Valley Civilization, the various other civilizations that subsequently followed, namely those of the Vedas, the Brahmanas, the Upanishads, the Bhagavad-gita, the two world-renowned Indian
epics, namely the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, and also the work of the ancient Indian materialists, will be dealt with. Points of interest such as the myths and the legends, the social structure, the ethics and philosophy, will be touched upon.
