講義概要
/Course description
The general purpose of this course is to reflect on the role of “imagination in religions. Stories of religious figures inspire imagination, belief and practice in religious traditions, including Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity and Islam. The present course will focus on the sacred biographies of two world religious traditions: Christianity and Buddhism. In these traditions, sacred biographies mediate between the theoretical works of theologians/dharmalogians and religious practices. The course puts an emphasis on the study of written documents but does not neglect other important expressions of sacred biographies: art and rituals. Showing the limits of rationalist and positivist reconstructions of history for the understanding of religious traditions, the course will shed light on other scholarly approaches to the study of sacred biographies. The production of sacred biographies is the result of unconscious or unconsidered action working on historical material, the introduction of a subjective element into the realm of fact. Thus, the study of sacred biographies offers insights into the formation of religious traditions, and the efforts to “acculturate”, “inculturate” and legitimize religious practices.
