| 講義概要 ／Course description |
This course is not about the study of encounters among various religious traditions. The clash of civilizations theory, for example, takes such approach and so does the inter-religious dialogue. While they have different understanding of “encountering” and its consequence, they both assume autonomous, clearly defined ideological/philosophical entities called “Christianity,” “Islam,” or “Buddhism” which can encounter. Instead of such general, essentialist approach, this course examines how actual people experience their encounter with “others” in modernity and may have responded religiously. In our examination, a special attention will be paid to a set of binaries such as the West and the non-West, the civilized and the primitive, and the colonizer and the colonized since these binaries are defining categories which shaped many modern encounters. | |
