Individual and Society in Western Traditions of Ethical Thinking
講義概要
/Course description
This course explores various types of ethical thinking in the Western traditions and their modern ramifications in the contemporary world. Students learn to examine three major streams of thought—philosophical, Jewish, and Christian—in order to investigate the distinctive and overlapping features of each. We ask: Why do we intend to behave in a certain manner in relation to others? Is there a coherent logic behind our preference toward our chosen behaviors? How is our ethical thinking formed? Why does it matter in society and community we belong to? What are the distinctive, or shared, ethical features among various religious and secular understandings of the ethical? By asking such questions, we attempt to better understand the thinking and precepts that underlie our conscious, and unconscious, ethical behaviors.

授業参加/Class participation (20.0%)
レポート/Report (50.0%)

Reading of approximately 20-40 pages is assigned each class. Prepared participation is expected.

Presentations: 30%
Each student is required to make two presentations per semester.
Presentation should not be a summary of the reading but should address the questions: “What is the author’s point or points? Why does this point (or points) matter?”

Final Paper: 50%
A final paper of minimum 5 pages in length is required. The paper should examine an ethical question from the text of the student’s choice.

Failure to complete any one of the above requirements will result in failure of the course.
