The aim of this course is to introduce students to the nature and role of religious beliefs, practices, and institutions in modern societies through a consideration of classical and contemporary theories of secularization and sacralization. Lectures, readings, and class discussions will cover the debates regarding the decline of traditional religion as a result of modernization and the development of new patterns of religious expression and involvement in secular society. |
