In the academic year 2012, the main focus is placed on political economy of the environment. The first part of the course introduces major political-economic theories and perspectives on environmental politics, emphasising the multi-disciplinary nature of this field of study. The second part examines case studies of international environmental policy-making including climate change, ozone layer depletion, biological diversity, and international economic institutions (including World Trade Organization, the World Bank, Global Environment Facility). The main themes and questions covered in seminars include: - What are the major political-economic perspectives on the global ecological crisis? - What factors explain the foreign environmental policy of advanced industrial states? How the interactions between states and markets formed environmental diplomacy in different advanced industrialized countries? How domestic political factors, such as political parties and institutional arrangements matter in the policy process? - What can be done to regulate the environmental behaviour of multinational corporations? What are the implications of varieties of capitalism (i.e. Coordinated Market Economy and Liberal Market Economy) in addressing environmental issues? - Is there a fundamental conflict between international trade and the World Trade Organization, on the one hand, and global environmental concerns, on the other? To what extent have institutions of international aid and development integrated environmental concerns? Is the ‘greening’ of the World Bank more than rhetoric? |
