The Development of Crime and Detective Fiction
講義概要
/Course description
Stories of crime and detectives are durable and seem irresistible. While generally considered more popular than canonical, the detective story has deep roots, a long history, and contains many of the essentials of a compelling narrative and successful emplotment. At least Poe in the reading list below is among the most well known names in world literature, others perhaps should be. Most of the authors below, however, have made their names have helped place detection and crime fiction among the most gripping kinds of stories—a status which they hold to this very day—as can be seen by the multitude of television series that have moved the locus of crime solutions into the scientific lab: CSI, Bones, Criminal Minds, etc., etc. But first, the fictions of crime and detection conquered the big screen and many stories below have been widely disseminated through the cinema, and became cinema classics.
The goals of this course are to familiarize you with the development of detection and crime fiction in short stories and novels. We will pay particular attention to the development of the detective archetype, elements of narrative structure, point of view, and plot, particularly this context of solving a crime. Familiarity with these elements will get you to think and write about literature in a more sophisticated fashion, and to introduce you to broader developments in modern narrative.

NOTE: All papers should be on a topic of your choice, if it is taken from the material covered in class you must come up with your own particular perspective or at least examine parts of the story not covered in class. Al papers should have one-inch margins, footnotes, no title page is necessary; paper should be double spaced with a 12 point font. There is one paper due for each reading. For the final you can expand on a paper you have turned in and it should be five to seven pages long. Direct quotes should not be so long that you have to indent. Short quotes imbedded in your own sentence are preferred. Footnote the quote with the author’s name, title of the book cited, and page(s) of the quote (either MLA or Chicago style). The 15 min. class presentation near the end of the course should be the topic of your final paper.
NOTE ON LITERARY WRITING: Your discussions, presentations, writing, like the goals of this course, should demonstrate a sophisticated approach to narrative fiction. I will give you information on history, broader currents in literature, information on the various authors, and an analysis of the literary texts in question. Your own essays should NOT retell the story or plot—except very briefly—you are writing for someone who has read the novel/story—you should explain the novel /story in a way that demonstrates that you have thought about it both analytically and creatively, and that your unique perspective sheds unique light on the meaning of the novel/story.
