The Literature and Culture of Premodern Japan
講義概要
/Course description
This course is intended as a general survey of the poetry, tales and performance genres that have exerted a lasting influence on the cultural history of pre-modern Japan.  The goals of the course are as follows: 1) To familiarize students with the core of Japan’s literary canon, beginning with the earliest collections of poetry from the 8th century and ending with the urban tales of the mid 18th century; 2) to introduce students to the issues and methodologies that have informed modern reception of pre-modern literature; 3) to acquaint students with some of the themes and ideals that have repeatedly found expression in Japanese culture; 4) to cultivate the student’s analytical and interpretive skills through in-depth class discussion and frequent writing assignments.

This course is highly recommended (but not required) for students who wish to take higher level classes in pre-modern Japanese literature.
