Japanese-German Relations 1861-1945
講義概要
/Course description
Despite being "late-comers on the world stage", Japan and Germany quickly turned into imperialist powers after opening bilateral diplomatic relations in 1861. Both countries later tried to dominate East Asia and Europe respectively, a development that ended in their joint defeat in 1945. The seminar will deal with the early German influence on Meiji era Japan, disputes between Berlin and Tokyo around 1900, the "Japanese-German War" in 1914, the rapprochement of the 1930s, and the “hollow alliance” during World War II. The course requires in-class presentations, short abstracts of reading assignments and a term paper.

講義スケジュール/Schedule [top] [outline] [bottom]
授業計画/Class schedule
1.In the first meeting, the outline of the course is going to be explained.
Both textbooks cover various aspects of bilateral relations so that there will be some choice regarding the topics to be dealt with in class. Required readings include chapters on military and diplomatic relations. Optional topics range from exoticism to academic or economic relations. Germans in Japan or Japanese in Germany could also be discussed.
Each topic will be dealt with in either one or two double-session(s) (Tue 4/5), allowing enough time for short presentations, clarification of difficult points and ample room for discussion.
If participants are interested, we could visit the German Institute for Japanese Studies (DIJ, est. 1989), which is located next door to Sophia University, or the German East Asiatic Society (OAG, est. 1873), which has its office in Aoyama Itchome.
