Nation, Nation-State and Nationalism in Modern Japan
講義概要
/Course description
Nationalism has been identified as one of the most powerful political and ideological forces in the modern world. With the “opening” of Japan in the mid-19th century, nationalism became a major force in Japanese politics and society as well. The creation of a strong nation-state was given top priority in Japanese politics for decades to come, and discussions of the problems of “the nation” and nation-building dominated societal debates and public intellectual discourse. After looking at the development of nationalism in the modern world in general and introducing the most important theories of nationalism, we will analyze the development of Japanese nationalism; the process of the creation of a nation-state and the attempts to instill a national consciousness into the “Japanese” population. We will situate Japan’s nationalism in a comparative historical context and look at similarities and differences to nationalisms in other countries and regions. Finally, we will look at contemporary discussions about Japanese nationalism(s) and at historical interpretations of the development of the Japanese nation-state.
