Ideology and Foreign Policy: Race, Nation and Imperialism
講義概要
/Course description
This course focuses on the development of European affairs between 1848 and 1945, and relates them to the concepts of race and nation as well as to contemporary ideologies such as social Darwinism, Communism, and Fascism. The course will start with a concise look at the years 1789 to 1848 and will possibly end with a similarly brief survey of the early postwar period. Thus, the seminar will cover the developments that have molded Europe into its modern shape.
The course requires in-class presentations, short abstracts of reading assignments and a term paper.

授業計画/Class schedule
1.In the first meeting, the outline of the course is going to be explained. This will depend to a certain extent on the interests and the number of students showing up in autumn.
Each topic will be dealt with in one double-session (Tue 4/5), allowing enough time for short in-class presentations, questions and room for (hopefully very lively) discussions.
