Introduction to Geography
講義概要
/Course description
Nowadays geographical contents become part of our everyday life. A simple visit for example to Google Earth shows the diversity of the earth landscapes. Everybody today is becoming familiar with maps by finding location and place to go with Google Maps or even with the mobile phone (such as iPhone for example). But what people think of geography? This course will introduce geography as a science. The objective is to develop an understanding of the main elements of the field of geography. It will present both physical geography which is related to natural environments and landscapes, and human geography which covers people and the cultural landscapes. Students will be given the opportunity to explore the importance of a geographic perspective in understanding contemporary life with up-to-date examples from the global warming, natural disasters (e.g. earthquakes), oil, the impact of the urbanization, to the influence of culture on human affairs. Geographic theories combined with real world situations will be presented at the local, regional and world level. Students are expected to participate as active learners, responsible for guiding and contributing to the content of the course, and whenever possible using their own backgrounds, knowledge, and experiences.
