The Afterlife and Other Worlds in Japanese Art
講義概要
/Course description
This seminar explores what Japanese premodern (and some modern) images and objects convey about perceptions of the afterlife and “other worlds.” We will draw comparisons with selected examples from similar traditions in India and China. Among topics considered are paintings of hell, paradise, and other realms, practices of self-mummification, self-immolation, and relic worship, burial traditions, funerary engagements with inanimate objects such as dolls and household objects, and the belief in special hells for women. Some classes will be conducted in museums or temples, schedule and enrollment permitting.
