Seventeenth Century Chinese Painting
講義概要
/Course description
For richness and diversity few periods in Chinese painting can match the late Ming, around 1573 to 1644.  The painting of this period was concerned with its own past than ever before.  Understanding the distant past was the beginning of creation.  Employed traditional Chinese subjects and revitalized ancient techniques for their compositions, the artists of this period were able to produce eccentric and fantastic forms of nature, extraordinarily delicate drawings of figures, sometime even distorted, and ravishing birds-and-flowers.  The seminar focuses on unique works by the most innovative artists of the period, namely, Ding Yunpeng, Wu Bin and Chen Hongshou, and deals with their paintings and graphic works to understand the full maturity of art and culture in the late Ming China.
