講義概要 ／Course description	This course looks at the history of modern Japanese art starting from the Meiji period. We will study the significance of modernity and modernism in various media such as painting, sculpture, craft, photography, and architecture. The course is organized chronologically but does not attempt to be a comprehensive survey. Instead, topics are organized thematically in order to highlight important issues in modern Japanese visual culture. These include nationalism, imperialism, urbanization, gender, and commodity consumption in the context of artistic production and visual representation.
