Art and Material Culture of the Military and Commoner Classes
講義概要
/Course description
This class surveys Japanese sculpture, painting, architecture, “minor” arts, and woodblock prints from the fifteenth through the nineteenth centuries. These years were characterized by dynamic international and interclass cultural exchange. We will explore religious and military works, the advent of popular, secular arts, and the influence imported objects, ideas, and technology had on culture and society. Some classes will be conducted in museums, schedule and enrollment permitting.
