Narrative Painting and Other Images that Tell Stories
講義概要
/Course description
This course introduces students to the study of Japanese art and media with a focus on images that tell stories. We will concentrate on the development and flowering of narrative painted scrolls (emaki 絵巻) during the classical and medieval periods, but will also examining early modern and modern works that tell stories, including examples from print media and film. We will consider how text and image interact in these works, imagine how they were originally employed, view them from a variety of academic perspectives, and think about how they are relevant today. The practice of art history involves writing about images, so we will create new written narratives for the works of art that we study. Some classes will be held in museums, schedule and enrollment permitting.
