講義概要
/Course description
This course introduces history of art from Asia starting from the Neolithic to the 18th century.  Areas from India in the west to Japan in the east will be covered.  The first half of the course will focus on the art from the ancient civilization of India and China. The second half of the course will deal more with secular art works produced throughout Asia in order to comprehend a diversity of culture in the region as well as their common denominators.
Origins of religious art and its development in Asia can be found in the sublime monuments of Buddhist sculptures and paintings in India.  In later periods we are able to find further growth in this art in South Eastern, Central and Far Eastern Asian countries.  As for secular arts we will mainly focus on Chinese paintings and calligraphy which demonstrate Chinese philosophy of man and nature, and which exemplify one of the most unique aspects of Asian art.  Chinese cultural and artistic influences on neighboring countries were unmistakable.  Japanese adaptation of Chinese art will be introduced as a typical example of artistic interrelation in Asia.  The purpose of production and the function of both religious and secular art will also be examined.  Through the study of these art works we will try to understand the fundamental characters of Asian culture and the mind that create them.
