講義概要 /Course description |
This course examines the history of art from the pre-historic period to the nineteen century. We will proceed more or less in chronological order, analyzing the major works of painting, sculpture, and architecture that epitomize each art historical period. Students will also be presented with the proper terminology for discussing art works. Emphasis is placed upon acquiring the basic knowledge of western art history while developing students’ skills in visual analysis, as well as on helping them understand the work of art in its physical, historical and social context. (The Gombrich textbook we use is quite weak in the field of non-western art history. Therefore, for those who are interested in taking basic art history courses on Asian art, I recommend other 200-level courses offered by Profs. Kobayashi and Yonekura.) |
