#03S.D. Fürst Hans-Adam II von und zu Liechtenstein on Evolving StatesA special lecture, ”Der Staat im drit-ten Jahrtausend - The state in the third millennium,” by S.D. Fürst Hans-Adam II von und zu Liechtenstein was held at In-ternational Conference Hall on the Yot-suya campus on November 16, 2016.Expressing his ideals regarding states, the speaker said that despite remarkable advances in science, tech-nology, medicine and economics of the 20th century, wars, conicts, and dictatorships caused much blood-shed. He suggested that states must put forth their best efforts to prevent wars and conicts; serve all people, not only privileged ones; aim to em-brace high levels of democracy; and address the challenges of global com-petition. To address these objectives, he advocated that states focus on for-eign affairs, law enforcement, educa-tion, and national nance, and dele-gate other authorities to local govern-ment and private sector issues.#04World Food Programme and Sophia Join in SeminarOn December 14, 2016, a So-phia University and World Food Pro-gramme (WFP) joint seminar on inter-national cooperation at International Conference Hall on the Yotsuya cam-pus featured a keynote address by Ms. Elisabeth Rasmusson, Assistant Executive Director of the WFP. The talk with a theme of “Toward Ze-ro Hunger: The force of partnerships, hopes for the next generation,” high-lighted activities conducted by the WFP with global companies. A discussion followed on “the new age of international cooperation and hopes for the next generation” with panelists from the WFP including its representatives in Malawi and Japan. Along with faculty from Sophia Univer-sity, they shared thoughts on civil soci-ety and what young people can do to help end world hunger. #02Distinguished Professor Fujisaki Keeps Flame of Friendship Burning On May 31, Distinguished Professor Ichiro Fujisaki visited the headquar-ters of the United Nations in New York to give a lecture in his ongoing com-mitment to international symposia and other activities dedicated to globaliza-tion. While there, he made sure to meet with Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres, his good friend since the two met a decade ago, when Mr. Guterres was 10th United Na-tions High Commissioner for Refugees and Professor Fujisaki was Chairman of UNHCR Executive Committee. The former colleagues still make a point of enjoying good meals and conversation together in Japan, New York, and wher-ever else their paths cross, howev-er briey. After their latest reunion, the Secretary-General honored the profes-sor’s request for a message to the So-phia community by writing, “Counting on you for World Peace. With my warm-est regards, António Guterres”. In January 2013, Sophia University welcomed Mr. Fujisaki as Distinguished Professor, a post through which he opened communication with students to deepen insight into global educa-tion and Japan’s role in the internation-al community. In his decades of illus-trious public service, he has held vari-ous posts throughout the world, includ-ing that of Ambassador of Japan to the United States starting 2008.5
