The world is currently in disarray. Political and economic trends shift from day to day, and it has become extremely dif-ficult to maintain clear views on global issues such as those regarding the environment, conflicts, and poverty. On the other hand, a wide variety of opportunities are available to young people, as we live in an era in which originality and uniqueness are valued and limitless potential is given free rein through the attitudes and actions of individuals. Thus, our quality as an institution of higher education is measured by the guidance we provide and how we shape the attitudes and actions of the young people who enter our university. Now, more than ever, is the time for us to promote the Jesuit principle of education “Men and Women for Others, with Others.” We do not need to view the current chaos in a negative light. Rather, we can regard this as an opportune time to apply our educational philosophy to various chal-lenges and to great effect. To realize a convivial and diverse society in this era, I believe foresight and adaptability will be in high demand. Foresight will be needed to comprehend social changes and to create a vision for the future, and adaptability will be needed to handle any situation that may arise. It is my mission as the new president to nurture such qualities by enhancing our curricula and programs so that our students are invigorated and inspired to reach greater heights as fu-ture world leaders.Professor, Department of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology16th President of Sophia UniversityYoshiaki Terumichi3Message
