Study Tour enables Su-nohara, who has worked at the Washington branch of The Nikkei Newspaper and as Visiting Fel-low at the Center for Strategic & International Stud-ies (CSIS), to teach students about current global issues on-site in real time and develop people who can bolster Japan’s global competitiveness. As he re-calls, “I studied abroad in the U.S. after becoming a journalist and learned about politics. I still clearly remember how shocked I was at the high level of the classes, and since then, my dream has been to provide the next generation the op-portunity to expe-rience that level of academic rigor as soon as possible. I created this pro-gram to enable students to study actual international political is-sues on-site, from historical perspectives.”The program included discussions with Richard Armitage, former Deputy Secretary of State, and Melanne Verveer, former Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues, U.S. Department of State. There were also lectures held at CSIS, Brookings In-stitution, and the Embassy of Japan in the United States of America, and a joint lecture at Georgetown University to conclude the tour. The students gained tremendously from learning high-level information usually only available to diplomats and special cor-respondents. T[ March 12-19 ]Washington D.C.
